NEW
WORSHIP SERVICE - Musical Kaleidoscope Worship
4th Sundays at 5:00pm
8/25/19, 9/22/19, 10/27/19, 11/24/19, 12/29/19 (December date is on the 5th
Sunday)
The Mangum Memorial church family has
provided a place of worship in Shreveport for 111 years.
The original location was at the corner of Stonewall and Missouri.
A small band of faithful believers in Christ started as a revival in in
the Queensborough neighborhood and was known originally as the Queensborough
Methodist Church. Renamed in honor
of Rev. W. A. Mangum who died while serving the church was the impetus for the
name change. The church relocated to
its present location at 3939 Pines Road in 1978.
The congregation has historically been a
white congregation. However, we
realize that heaven will not be segregated by race, ethnicity, education, gender
or any of the other many ways that humanity has placed barriers upon segments of
our population. Heaven will resemble
the multifaceted colors of a kaleidoscope. To
that end, we are seeking to expand our worship offerings in terms of music.
Our current 10:30 worship service is traditional in style and filled with
wonderful hymns and anthems. The new
worship service will feature Urban Gospel and has been named Musical
Kaleidoscope. Not sure what
Urban Gospel is? Think of the songs
of Tasha Cobbs Leonard, J. Moss, Hezekiah Walker, Kierra Sheard, Ricky Dillard,
Michelle Williams Casey J., Charles Jenkins and so many others.
The Mangum family requested an African
American pastor in 2017 and Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey and the Cabinet
appointed Rev. Sonya Renee Lars as their first African American pastor and the
first female Senior pastor. Pastor
Sonya, as her flocks refers to her, lives by the mantra that we are disciples of
Christ that are charged to make new disciples of Christ regardless of race or
other societal markers that separate us. This
is reflected in our 10:30 Traditional Worship service as well as in our
community events such as Trunk or Treat, Spring Fling Community Picnic, our One
Day VBS and many other events. The
Mangum family is working hard to make both of our worship services reflective of
our surrounding community. Mary
Rogers will continue to direct the Chancel Choir in the weekly Traditional
worship service at 10:30am as we add Christopher Battle to build our Praise Team
for our Musical Kaleidoscope services at 5pm on the 4th
Sundays!
Mangum’s foray into a very different
worship style base on Urban Gospel is our effort to cross barriers and start
conversations and relationships. We
are seeking out choirs, praise bands, musicians, liturgical dancers, Christian
drill teams, Christian comedians and other Christian arts/artists, to come and
join us the 4th Sundays to worship God and break down man made
barriers between folks in our community. The
Musical Kaleidoscope worship services will be approximately an
hour long followed by a reception to give the congregation and the participants
time to meet and greet one another. As
Christians, it is all about making new relationships to draw people to Jesus
Christ. To participate or get more
